The crimes have finished, the deaths have ceased, the monster locked up and put away. The town can finally rest, because the terrors are already forgotten, like a bad memory. The nightmares, however, haven't. They haunt you. Nightmares don't go away. They stick around. They like your fears, your worst memories. They like the chase, the psychological chase, through your mind. They take after you, you made them. Now you're paying for it. The wrong monster was locked up. The monster that only you could see, nobody else. They saw the monster after you stopped believing. The monster that was locked up, was nothing compared to the monster that you are. And you will get your Punishment, In Due Course.

The name is Pain, I am a demon, but don't be quick to judge. You humans attach beliefs to someone the instant your eyes fall upon them simply because of what you think you know. I am a demon, yes, but I am not cruel. You, human, are the cruel and wretched one for assuming I am. I am not cruel. I create monsters, but unlike other demons you may know of, I give my monsters what they want, what they think they need to be happy. I am not cruel, and I will prove it by offering you this: whatever you desire. Understand, of course, that you have to learn somehow. I'll give you what you want, but just as you live every day to get older, there has to be some kind of cost. -- What is the cost? Depends... what do you desire? Make the deal with me and then judge if I am cruel or not... --- A collection of short stories.
