Valkyrie Amethyst Faucher has always tried to live as sheltered a life as she can. But, when you’re a member of a band of superheros that are employed to keep their city safe, that’s not easy to do. All Valk wants is to be courageous enough to fight crime alongside her family, to function like a human being in social situations (not like a blubbering, shy imbecile) and, most of all, to gain control over her aura powers. Her life, even if it blessedly straightforward, is a constant struggle.

On the other hand, for Octavian Robinson, life’s been going pretty dang well. Ever since he’s been recruited into the group for his ability to create illusions, he’s fit right in. Here, he can be free to paint and play his viola without fear of being judged and does his best to keep the uneasy harmony within his family of rather dysfunctional superheros. He’s even forged a sibling-like relationship to the group’s youngest initiate, Scarlett-- the two regard eachother as such.

But Valkyrie and Octavian’s lives are about to be turned upside down. Whispers of a coming apocalypse fly through the streets, and after an attempt on her life by a mysterious shadowy creature, Valk discovers she may be the one prophesied to stop it. The girl that's too scared to ask for the correct topping on her pizza-- saving the world? The villains she meets certainly aren't the nicest...

As for Octavian, he's losing Scarlett. On the very same day as the attack, Octavian’s sister goes mysteriously missing. With the rest of the group so focused on stopping the apocolypse, there is no time to stop and search for her, and Octavian can't shake the feeling that he's losing the one person he has sworn to protect.

As for the task of keeping his family in harmony?

Let's just say he'll have his work cut out for him.
