Guguho ang mundo ni Lotte sa biglaang pagpanaw ng kanyang tiyahin na siyang umaruga sa kanya mula pagkabata. Doon, animo'y tumigil ang oras: ang mga tao ay nakasakay pa sa kalesa, nakasuot ng mga mahahabang damit, at nakatira ang mga spirits, witch, wizards at iba pang mga magical creatures. Mapapadpad siya sa isang lumang mansyon na tinitirhan ng labing-isang lalaki--na malalaman niyang may kanya-kanya palang sumpa at pinangangambahan ang muling pagbabalik ng nakatatanda nitong kapatid na si Levine Blackbury, ang kinatatakutang witch ng East Auvergnia. Kahit magulo ang bahay na puno mg lalaking may iba't-ibang ugali at personalidad, sinusubukan namang kayanin ni Lotte ang bago niyang buhay kasama ng mga ito--hanggang sa madiskubre niya ang lihim ng ipinagbabawal na pinto, ng witch na si Levine, at ng isang misteryosong estranghero na maaaring maging taga-pagligtas niya, o magpapahamahamak sa kanya...
