L'automne. Un cortège royal en voyage aux frontières du royaume. Pris dans une escarmouche fomentée par un vassal revanchard, un roi et sa cour se retrouvent acculés et cherchent refuge dans le château le plus proche, celui d'un vieux marquis au service du roi.
Mais voilà qu'en quelques jours, le séjour tourne au drame.
Le souverain disparaît mystérieusement.
Tous les habitants des lieux se jaugent et se regardent de travers. Sentant la tension monter, le marquis fait appeler le coroner royal pour éclaircir l'affaire.
Une enquête médiévale à huis-clos, qui nous plonge dans l'intimité d'un roi à travers le regard de ses proches et de ses subalternes.
