A short story collection based on various fantasy prompts that I'll add to throughout the year.
-Lantern's Flame. When the coldest winter in living memory threatens to wipe out a small village, Bess is chosen to travel to neighbouring towns to see how they are faring. To reach these towns she must travel through the insidious forest with only her trusty lantern as her companion.
-Hanged Man's Song. A knight has to travel to a fearsome forest that harbours a woman who will not obey the New Rules the king has made. In order to find her location, the knight has to use necromancy on a hanged man's corpse.
-Teddy. A young boy has to confront the monster that lives in his room with only his stuffed toy to aide him.
-Timeless Love. A young woman with a potentially fatal illness meets the love of her life, and learns that for some time is not linear.
-Rats. A retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, with a little twist.
-Empress, Star, Lovers. A young woman keeps drawing the same tarot cards over and over again.
-Cold, Dark Earth. The doctor's daughter has taken her refuge in a crumbling estate with her lover, much to the dissatisfaction of her father and the villagers, who have decided to come and fetch her back.

Alera lost her mother early in life and was raised by a strict king for a father and the many nursemaids who crossed themselves before touching her. It wasn't until she was of marrying age that she learned why the people feared her. She was canny... like her forest mother. Canny and feared to be fae. The only person besides her father who didn't seem to fear her was the handsome stable boy. He knew what she was and didn't cross himself before letting his hands touch hers longer than needed for helping her to her mount. And on her 18th birthday, neither could deny the bond that dragged them together. But her father had her sold off to make an advantageous match with the neighboring king's sullen and cruel son. Even a kingdom over, the whispers of the canny princess the people feared as fae reached royal ears. But they thought to use her to their advantage...to put fear in their own people's hearts and make them bend the knee. Avoid looking into those golden eyes. One look is enough and you will be lost forever. Once upon a time, beyond the forests and mountains, where the leaves always wore the color of autumn, a girl with great talent grew up, with her mother and father. One day, however, their happiness was stolen by tragedy. Her mother fell ill and death called her to the other side. Nothing was the same anymore. Her father remarried. And in the end, time took him away too. Iris was left alone with her stepmother and stepsister. They made her a maid, a slave. A prisoner of a life she hated. But something deep inside her prevented her from leaving the house she grew up in - her home. There, as a child, she created all the miracles with her mother and wanted to continue doing so, to give joy to those less fortunate. Like when she made a dress for the butcher's wife, whom her husband no longer loved, that made her irresistible to him again. The Suggestion Box, Volume 3: One Thousand Words
In this edition of The Suggestion Box, I made some changes to the solicitations for each piece: (UPDATE: I have gone through and added, in parentheses, the genre of each "short story", if that helps! You'll see that there is a variety... be sure to read them all!) 1. Titles--All the segments have titles now, giving them a real sense of "short story." It also helped me differentiate between those lists that fit better as continuations for either my longer story arc (available here under the title "Serenity's Light") or separate entities. 2. Images--All segments came with an associated image from the outset, giving me added fuel for inspiration. 3. Word Limit--I set myself a goal of "one thousand words" to go with each list. Very often I exceeded it, but it also gave the opportunity for more development than just a quick "one-off," as it were. The "chapters" in this series are all strictly self-contained and (except in the case of a few) are unrelated to each other. Enjoy!Complete

For the fae, magic is everything: status, power, wealth, honor. For Vera Reite, a fae born with no magic, it is a shameful reminder that she will never amount to anything. Whispers of a fae-killing monster begin to circulate the Moon Court. It lurks in the woods, feeding off the mana of its victims. Those that go missing and find themselves at the mercy of the beast are never seen or heard from again. Fear quickly takes hold of the fae court; it's only a matter of time before their whole world is destroyed by this creature. However, it offers Vera a glimmer of hope. When she learns of it, she ventures into the wood to kill the beast, believing that she will be able to absorb the magic it has stolen. But the woods are as dangerous as the beast, and Vera soon finds herself lost. In a stroke of luck, she comes across an old manor deep in the forest where a strange boy is sealed away.
