Ghosts. Some people never had the chance to say goodbye to their loved ones, so they come back as a ghost. See it as a second chance, a way to make up for what they did wrong. Some people simply did not have the chance to die with their relatives and lovers, others chose to die alone. Ghosts are able to go back to their 'human' form so others can see them, but they're only able to do this once. After that, they're finally able to really die and go to wherever you believe dead people go. Nobody knows what happens after death, or what happens when ghosts turn into their human form when they aren't with their loved ones, but for this story it doesn't really matter either.

As for the rest are ghosts able to move objects in the 'human' world, but it takes a lot of energy. That's why they barely make any contact with humans and why you probably have never encountered one.

There's only one problem with ghosts; it is not possible to contain the memory of the person that died in the transition from human to ghost. They know nothing about themselves or their past. They even don't know that they're ghosts. That's why every ghost is connected to an item from their past, which is hopefully able to help them find what's left to do to make the last transition. It can take a while, but almost every ghost manages to find their loved ones. Those who don't, live on to be a ghost forever. Forever is a long, long time, when you're a ghost.
