Her step-brother uses any excuse to hit and punish her and her stepmother is too oblivious to actually help her. She was broken and beaten....and then she met him. Chicago had never greeted the Valentines with open arms. Instead it greeted them with a slap in the face and reality served on a silver platter. Living with such a large family and such a small income was harder than anyone could have imagined especially when your best form of income comes from your mom being a hooker. Alexander is a middle child in the large family. At the prime age of fourteen he's starting to become confused about many things in his life such as where he fits in, what he wants to do when he's older and his sexuality. Nolan is in the same boat. All he wanted was to make it to the end of his term but now with no one to write to he sends one last letter knowing he will never again get a response, so when he does he is shocked to find out the new tenant of his sisters house is the one who wrote to him. Finding comfort in the letters passed between each other they find ways to cope and make the necessary changes in their lives. James helps Cher move on from her past and Cher helps James to see a light in the darkness. All Cher wants is to start fresh and all James wants is to make it to the end of his term.
