Margaret Layton is dead, and nobody really even cares a little bit. Still not being legally old enough to take care of himself, her son, Calum, gets shipped off from his tiny rural home in Maine to the big, lively city of New York where his aunt lives. He assumes his life will be great, with his aunt being busy and all with her grimy vinyl shop in Harlem. Until he learns the catch to it all...he has to work there alongside the perky and upbeat Waverly Whitman and the eleven year old cousin he never knew he had. Waverly is a spunky New York native who spends her time reading Tolstoy and painting abstract art. Soon, the two are almost forced to get along, and discover their many differences. Calum has a mother that everybody loved and still died, and Waverly has a father that everybody hates and won't die. Waverly and Calum not only discover New York, but themselves during their stay together in the Big Apple.
"You do know how to eat a burger, right?"
Summer rolled her eyes, looking up at him with feigned exasperation. "Of course I do," she retorted, then lowered her voice as she leaned in, her expression shifting to one of genuine concern. "Do you think they have a fork and knife? So I can, you know... cut it?"
