Celeste Clancy’s life is relatively normal. She loves her family, her school, her sport, her town, and most importantly her friends. Her friends are basically her second family. She would bend over backwards to protect them with every fiber of her being and will always be there to listen and protect them if need be. However, her faith in herself as a friend shatters when her best friend, Neville Dupont, kills himself the night of his seventeenth birthday after asking her for some help. She starts hearing him again, but when his voice stops as quickly as it came, Celeste believes it must just be her missing him too much and her mind imagining him to help her with her grief. At this early stage, she closes herself off from other people - including her other friends - feeling like no one else understands what she's going through. When a new boy, Casper West, comes to school, they quickly become close friends due to both of their needs for a new friend. That’s when Celeste started feeling him again. He started visiting her again, whispering messages in her ear at night when no one else was around. She felt comfortable around him, she knew him and didn't mind him being around her even though he wasn't supposed to be there. Of course that was before her family was taken while she was sleeping and all that she had as a clue was a note that said, “Do exactly what I tell you to. If you let anyone know about this, I will not be pleased.” Anxiety sets in after a few demands and not heeding the note's warning, she tells Casper, who agrees to help her no matter the circumstances. Now Celeste and Casper are on the hunt for her family while trying to figure out exactly what happened to Neville the night of his death.
