Her purpose? Just to stick by her fraternal twin sister Alyssa's side. The two were both raised by Luke Skywalker after being orphaned by their parents, and were taught the ways of the force alongside Ben Solo, becoming close friends over time. You both eventually were forced to forget about Ben and manage to escape his infamous rage and turn to the Dark Side, and found your ways into The Resistance eventually. The first four chapters are kind of like a 'prologue', to tell you the situation, and make you familiar with the characters.
