Things began rolling downhill for 17-year-old Vivian Schmitt after her father's death and her mother's decision to pack up and move from Texas suburbs to small-town Michigan. On top of readjusting to a new school, a new town, and coping with the loss of her father, her mother's depression severs the bond they once shared. Once her last source of solace, her cat Miyuki, dies, and she's on the brink of giving into depression herself, she finds herself turning into... a cat.

One of her classmates, Christopher, reveals that he is like her; he turns into a dog. He thrusts her into a world where her view of the world becomes reality and the monsters that plague her mind take physical form form, and together, they face these monsters while Vivian learns to see that these monsters aren't insurmountable, and that perhaps the world isn't as awful to her as it may seem.
