With the ongoing war against Stellaーtheir neighboring countryー Fiore needs new troops and fast. Unfortunately for Lucy Heartfilia, her family is dirt-poor and her twin sister, Ashley Heartfilia, is older by nine hours, which apparently makes her fourteen at the perfect moment for the army to take her away.

Determined to never let this happen, Lucy pulls a trick. When the soldiers take her away instead to a military training camp, she's registered as Ashley Heartfilia. She never sees her family again.
