It is 1941. World War Two has started. Alexander Bernik is a German soldier stationed in Amsterdam. He writes letters to his beloved Annelise, who lives in Norway.

Annelise Eriksen is living in Lillehammer, Norway, under the iron fisted Nazi occupation. She writes letters to Alexander while fighting German rule in her country.

As the war wages on, Alexander finds it harder to stay loyal to both Germany and Annelise, and begins to feel torn in two. Annelise can't help but wonder if Alexander is the same man she knew before the war.

Their situation changes when the Nazis start arresting Jews.
