In high school, students spend the majority of their time coming to terms with themselves and learning about who they are. Some students find themselves easier than others and are comfortable in their own skin. Lapis Lazuli isn't afraid to be herself and is generally open about who she is. Peridot Diamond, on the other hand, is not so open about her feelings, due to growing up in such a strict household. She refuses to admit her sexual orientation and her feelings towards Lapis. When trying to convince her classmates that she's straight, she says the wrong thing in the heat of the moment and ruins her relationship with Lapis.
