A Western Urban Fantasy That Doesn't Have a Title Yet
It is 1886 and Nell Roberts's entire family is dead. Husband murdered, sister's family taken by some mysterious fever. She herself has been targeted by the prejudiced locals who killed her husband. Unable to continue running her family farm by herself she sets off for Denver to meet the only person she knows, Alice Whittier.
Nell attempts to adapt to life in the city but is finding it nearly impossible to cope. Her entire way of life has changed and she feels hopelessly lost and adrift--and then she meets Alice's brother, Levi, who is a detective. He's also thoughtful, considerate, handsome, and a widower just like she is.
But while an attraction is blossoming between Nell and Levi, something concerning is happening to Alice. She's becoming more and more obsessed with the church she's found in the city. A church that has some ideas that feel strangely uneasy to Nell, with a leader whose charm and poise seems to be belying something sinister. And oddly, people seem to be dying around him left and right. When Alice abruptly takes off with the church to follow them into the desert Nell and Levi know there's nothing good to be had about it and run to find her before something terrible happens.
