Hiccup left Berk before his final test and travelled to another island. A few days after his disappearance, a newcomer with amnesia washes up on Berk's shores after a storm, and becomes quick friends with Astrid. Stoick, after ten years of grieving the disappearance of his son, steps down as Chief and gives the position to someone unexpected.
