Alex Bishop is the new kid in town and he's not happy about it. He misses his home town of Fairling Indiana and the friends he had to leave behind. He has been deposited at his new address in Elkhart Indiana where he knows no one. But much to his surprise he meets new friends at North Side Middle School who are as adventuresome as he. Alex and his friends, Dawn Marks, Lee Martin, Fletcher Clark, and Glenna Williams, Become involved with their first mystery when rumors being circulated within the school accuse their History teacher Mr. Ottis Wells of murdering a man. Alex and his friends go about investigating Mr. Wells past to get at the truth. After this mystery is solved with the help of police detective Brian Burns, the amateur detectives are eager to solve another case.
