Word having spread about the forging of the One Ring, the elves had no choice but to hide the remaining three Rings of Power and prepare for war with Sauron.
Despite the High King Gil-Galad sending an army to aid Eregion, their fall was still inevitable for they had arrived too late. There may have been thousands and thousands of elves defending their home, but there were hundreds of thousands of orcs ready to destroy it.
As the remaining elves of Eregion realised that there wasn't even a home left for them to fight for, and that the number of orcs were simply too overwhelming, they had no choice but to retreat. Gathering what was left of his army and the now former elves of Eregion, Elrond led them further up north where they would build a stronghold.
That is where their home would be from now on. Not Eregion near the Gates of Moria, but Imladris in a valley beneath the Misty Mountains.

Where Lord Elrond's firstborn was the evening star, his second born was the morning star. Blessed with the ability to call on the light of the dawn, Allora is a paragon of hope as she sheds light on a growing darkness. And as the tenth member of the Fellowship of the Ring, she journeys with them to destroy the One Ring for good and rid the lands of Middle-Earth of the darkness and evil of Sauron, the very being her father fought over 3000 years prior. Where he fought at the start of the battle, his daughter will fight for the end. But through all this fighting and all this darkness and light; through being the ray of hope for everyone else, Allora finds a ray of hope for herself. A ray of hope that takes form in her Elvish companion, Legolas. Facing darkness from the likes of which she's never seen and feelings from the likes of which she's never felt, it's safe to say that this battle is going to be harder than any that Allora has ever fought before in her long life.
