For as long as anyone can remember, humans have always been obsessed with love. Love, trust, safety, security. Companionship. Philosophers young and old from the present to centuries ago pondered why so many of us seek such an unconditional and deep attachment to another. While monogamy has proven not to work for everyone and some enjoy their polyamorous relationships, there are still many who enjoy the thought of having their one and only.

Many with the motto: "While no one is completely different, no one is exactly the same." We can even return to Plato's Symposium, where Socrates discusses how the Greek Titan Prometheus made humans out of mud and asked Athena to breathe life into them. Socrates goes onto say that humans originally came in twos, with round bodies and heads mended together back to back. They had two arms and two legs each. Double was their might and speed. They came in three sexes: men, women, and man and woman.

It wasn't the humans began to rise against the Gods, tired of being used as sacrifices, were separated by Zeus, and had the sexes rearrange in the image of Gods. He had them adjusted accordingly so that men and women could marry and reproduce together to build their own families. This mechanism for a long time kept humans happy and they returned to worshiping the Gods once more.

Because of this particular origin, however, it is said that people who are searching for their soulmate are really searching for their other half.

It all happened one day. You opened your eyes to a blue sky and green grass as far as the eye could see, animals here and there walking about. It was all so peaceful, the sun and wind against your skin, coercing you to get out there and explore, mine that tree, build a pickaxe, kill those mobs. I've dreamed of the perfect marriage ever since I was a little girl: a marriage complete with a hardworking husband while I tended to the home and our children, preferably four little rugrats to call my own. I dreamed of a life filled with laughter, joy, and success, a life we built together. I dreamed of growing old next to my husband, creating a great love story to tell our grandchildren someday. It all seemed so possible. I was raised to be the perfect wife, after all. From the outside, it seemed I had exactly what I dreamed of with the rich, determined husband; the brilliant, gaudy diamond ring; and the beautiful home filled with the hope of future children. Yes, it was all a dream come true. I should have felt grateful, really. The problem is, I also wanted a marriage based on love, passion, and affection, but those are the only things my husband cannot give me . . . . . . because they're reserved for her. Feel free to point them out! * Comments, active engagement, and helpful critiques are welcomed. * Mean, unnecessary comments that attack me, personally, or other commenters will be ignored and deleted. It takes a lot of courage to publish your work and for others to actively engage in a community. I'd like to keep this a safe and fun place to rage at imperfect heroes and cheer for darling heroines! * I'm not a spicy writer. I rather use my word count for plot, character development, and GROVEL!!! * Most importantly, I hope you enjoy the little world I'm creating. Happy reading, everyone! ADS/Imaginationgirl35

Everything changed when they came out of hiding, terror spread across the world as people began to question if our presidents and our global leaders lied to us and weren't from the same race. The Beasts blended in amongst us as if we were the same, except humans didn't have the same predatory instincts and we couldn't change our forms like they could. Soon after we learnt that we weren't the only species people began going missing. Some were unlucky and taken as something that the Beasts called a Mate that one word made fear spread throughout my veins, I would rather sell my soul than have one of them mutts chain me to them. Six months went by before the government, that was un-tainted by this vile race began to take action into their own hands contacting other countries and militaries causing the great war to happen, sending both my parents off to fight for our rights. Only one of them came back, two months was the longest we lasted before we were overpowered by them. Six years of living in this dysfunctional environment and my hatred had never dwindled. Some people still believed in god and had faith in him, I didn't know what I believed in but I prayed like everyone else that I would get through another day without hearing the soul crushing word 'Mate'. A Mutually Assured Attachment

26 parts Complete Mature

Roses are red, violets are blue. Want a soul mate? We've got some for you. - A Mutually Assured Attachment A "kick-ass awesome idea". That was how Ally introduced the idea to me. A social experiment to determine the best relationship formatting and she wanted me - ME! Elowyn Jane Fitz-Simmons, quiet chemistry nerd extraordinaire - to join in. My response: not just no, but hell no! Who needed that kind of romantic, I-look-into-your-eyes-and-instantly-fall-in-love rubbish in their life? Certainly not me. Did the idea of having someone to return home to at the end of the day peak a small interest in me? Yes. But that was the purpose of a cat. Something to care after, something to love, but nothing that required too much effort...Simple and easy. Perfect. And, yet, somehow - although I pass all blame firmly onto Ally - I found myself not only interviewing candidates, but going on dates, moving in with three men and introducing my great-grandmother to my three new beaus. Why? All because of a Mutually Assured Attachment. P.S. I need a new best friend. Any suggestions??
