Aleira is an orphan, living with Ann, her caretaker, in Ronin, her district. Both her parents were murdered by Restraining Order officials. Their deaths, in her mind, are her fault. Losing the only person who was there to raise her, she plunges into the busy life of Keeper initiation, and her identification is changed to Lareine. Gone is the weak sixteen year old, Aleira. She disguises her female identity, seeing as there are no female Keepers, and endures all the jibes and jeering by the other Keepers, who view her as a queer. The only highlight is a man. Nineteen year old Isair, with one silver and one green eye. He is the youngest Marshal, officials ranking higher than Keepers, ever appointed. He is different from the other RO, he is hiding something, he isn't merely Cresta's dog, he's a mystery waiting to be unraveled But can Lareine manage the impulsive and strong-willed disaster hiding behind the cool and strong facade that is Isair?
