As long as the legends have existed, Avians and Merpeople have been at war.

Avians feared Merpeople as they were told from a young age that merpeople would lure unexpecting Avians to the sea with their beautiful singing, drown them; due to their lack of swimming abilities (their wings are too heavy to swim with), and feast on them. This kept the Avians far away from the sea, that and the law forbidding it.
In fact, you couldn't leave the cloud you were raised on until you reached 15 years of age.

Merpeople lived in grace and harmony at the bottom of the sea, and they also had a fear for their enemies. Due to the myth of Avians ripping Merpeople to shreads if they dare creep up to high to the surface.

Of course, both myths were far from the truth. But the two beings kept to themselves for quite some time. Until one curious Avian turned 15 years old...
