Ten year old Hugo Schwartz enters an enigmatic train filled with many wonders he had never thought about.
The conductor is awfully mysterious though and very churlish as he rarely speaks. When he does, it is either a derogatory comment, or something very odd that Hugo cannot seem to figure out. As the train continues to make its way into the dark of the night, time seems to get slower. Hugo gets this gloomy feeling as he explores hidden rooms of the train. But will the train ever stop? Will it finally reach a certain location? Or will it keep going forever?
