"You need a hand?" I hear a deep baritone voice ask from behind.
"I don't need your help," I growl out, keeping my eyes on the engine in front of me.
"Sure you don't," he says sarcastically. I curl my hands on the hood, trying to reel in my anger. I hear the gravel crunch under his foot, indicating that he's getting closer.
I let out a huff, "I don't! Especially not from someone like you," I spat, finally turning around to face him with a glare.
He stops in his tracks. "Someone like me?" he asks with furrowed brows.
I let out a dark chuckle. "Don't act so innocent," I say with a sneer.
"What are you talking about?" he asks finally getting frustrated, and running a hand through his hair.
"Why are you really here for?" I ask, trying to ignore my fast beating heart. I see him pause for a moment, his eyes flicking with uncertainty before it's gone, and his stoic face is back.
This is it. Please tell me the truth Mason. Come on.
Please.
"The race, of course. What else?" he says with a shrug of his shoulders.
I clench my teeth together, feeling a strong ache in my chest.
He lied.
