All it took for Ferne's world to crumble to pieces was one simple infection. It spread quickly, leaving doctors and scientists no time to figure out the source of the infection. It'd kill people slowly, starting with nasty bruises and high fevers which would last at least a week, eventually moving onto uncontrollable spouts of anger and hunger. After that ... death.
With no military, no economy, and no leaders, everything goes to hell. Neighbour turning against neighbour. Friend turning against friend. No one is sure if they'll fall victim to the infection next from someone else, so they isolate themselves. No one is coming to save you, no one is going to help you. You're completely and utterly alone. Unless you can find the rare few friends among the undead.
