Irina is a Grisha-more specifically, a Phoenix Summoner. Sounds cool, right? The Original Phoenix Summoner who can summon a ball of fire, light up the world, or sprout fire wings at will? Well, for Irina, it's not exactly like that. Her powers are bound by her emotions, making them unpredictable and uncontrollable. She can't just call on them whenever she wants.
Irina hates leaving her room. She prefers to hide away, pretending the world doesn't exist. The only times she ventures out are to eat or train-those are the only things she can bear. Her solace is in books. Reading brings her peace, offering an escape from the fears and uncertainties of the world around her.
People, including other Grisha, fear her-fear what she is. They look at her as if she's cursed by the Saints or has come from hell itself. It's a living nightmare to be seen as something to fear, something to avoid. Irina never asked to be a Phoenix Summoner. She never wanted this life.
All she ever wanted was to live a normal life, to be with her friends again in Ketterdam. She misses Kaz and Inej deeply. At just ten years old, Irina was tested by Grisha Examiners, and when they discovered her powers, she was immediately taken to the Little Palace. Her friends had to watch in heartbreak as they were helpless to stop her. Irina prays to the Saints every night, hoping that one day she can escape the palace and return to her beloved friends.
Everything changes when Alina Starkov arrives at the Little Palace. The Sun Summoner-the one who can defeat the Fold. The Summoner everyone adores, the one everyone worships. And with Alina's presence, everything in Irina's life is about to shift.
