Val is 16 years old. She is in an orphanage in Italy and is awaiting her adoption, but since she is 16 she has two months until she is shipped to America and put into foster care until she is 18. She also has a very small chance to get adopted.
To Val's surprise she does get adopted, by a boy named Ashton. He is in a band and she spends her summer with them on tour.
