In every corner of the country, witches are being thrown into burning pits of fire, their skin scorched until it crumbles to dust. Kings, dukes, commanders, priests, all conspiring with one another to bring death to any threat coming their way. 

Seraphina Blackwood, Princess of the Fells, is a witch. For 18 years, her mother, Evanora, taught her everything that she knew. As Queen, Evanora used her powers as a gift, a way to help her people. But, 18 years later, her family's secret was uncovered and the last of Seraphina's family was burnt to ashes. 

Seraphina ran. She ran away from home, faking her death, and her family tree was broken. Her home was raided, her family's name burnt to the ground. People of power banished the Blackwood name -- whoever uttered it would face death. 

She's taken up a new name: Maeve, a warrior queen. Nobody must discover her true identity; nobody must know that she has royal blood running through her veins.

But, she is determined to stand strong. Determined to cherish her gift. Determined to carry out the promise she made to her mother: the promise to stay alive.
