Rick originally wanted him dead. But had a change of heart after Negan proved himself loyal time and time again. Maggie was very close to killing him, but when she saw he was wracked with grief, she belived that living like that was worse than death and decided to let him suffer. He decided it upon himself to stop relying on an inanimate object. A baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire and naming it after his deceased wife. He threw it in the fire. Closing a chapter on his life, now opens a new one.
