After the death of her father, Elise Ufrien's world shattered, and she was forced to pick up the pieces on her own. Her mother, a once vibrant woman, is now broken and rarely leaves her cot.

When a royal decree goes out, Elise finds herself back in the academy she just left from to undergo a trial. Anyone found with magic is placed in the kings imperial army to fight the growing rebellion. However things are never as they seem, someone is out destroy her, friends will betray her, and one man will adore her. Elise must learn to watch her back and find out where her loyalties lie.
