She grew up watching them, fearing them. A young girl in Birmingham, being told to stay away from the Shelby family at whatever cost. Whispering their name as if they'd hear her, and knowing even then that if she were to end up caught up in the lot that she'd end up dead.

But that didn't stop the lad with the piercing blue eyes from thinking that she was the most beautiful creature in the world. The first time he'd ever seen her, he knew that there would seldom be a girl that could ever catch his eye just as she did. And he was right. She remained the apple of his eye for years and years, never saying much to her, knowing that she hated him for who he was and what he did. He didn't mind, though. He hated himself, too.

Until one day, one instant, brought them together in a way that neither of them could ever foresee or control.
