Being kidnapped then 'accidentally' eavesdropping on a lot of Intel that was specifically not for outside ears, was definitely not your way of being 'recruited' into the mafia world. Much less end up with a companion who didn't seem very fond of you, but stuck guarding and watching you. A Watchdog sort of man he was, and almost entirely too suffocating.
