The Paladins always knew who their enemy was, and that despite the vast size of the Galra empire in the end they could be undone.
Everything changed when they found a distress signal in the far flung outer realm of the universe. They assumed it to be desperate rebuke fighters, but it was something they couldn't have imagined.
