This story belongs to the series "From Ashes", and the plot follows the events of the stories "A World That Will Not Turn to Ash" and "The Nightwatchman". To avoid spoilers, read them first.
Fire can turn everything to ash, but sometimes it's possible to rise again from ashes, and, if one can make through the flames without burning, he gets stronger.

The story really expands to a movie-sized scope as it goes on. Features Miles' existential crisis and also flashbacks to when Spider was with the 1st Recom Unit. Recoms Lyle Wainfleet and Mansk are also greatly developed. Did my best to be logical and reasonable with the in-movies set canon, and sequel foreshadowing.
