On a deserted road in Maine, a young woman's car breaks down in a storm. Alone in the night, terrified by the thunder and lightning, she trudges through the sideways rain. She has traveled from New York City in search of the stranger who wrote a letter claiming to have something that belonged to the woman's late husband. She's only twenty-seven but already a widow. At last, drenched, she comes upon an isolated house, a car on cinder blocks in the yard, a rusted washing machine on the lopsided front porch.
