Humans know nothing about the truth of sirens.

We are not a form of your fantasy of "Mermaids", we live on land, on islands away from people, in fear that humans will find us.
We do not lure people to their deaths, we simple sing to sing. It's in our nature to sing, when happy, sad, or simple to let each other know where we are. It is not our fault that humans find themselves captivated by our songs. It is their fault that their ships crash on our shores. But it doesn't take long until they find fault in us, and seek a form of revenge.
I don't know if the humans tales of us being sea creatures comes from with their fascination of the endless depths of the sea, believing that creatures beyond comprehension reside there; or if it's the fact that angry sailors find their revenge in tying our feet together with a large boulder and throwing us into the ocean to end our lives with water-logged songs.
Maybe it simple comes from what they tell people when they return home; that the sirens are in the ocean where they belong.

I grew up knowing the truth, of the horror of the relation between sirens and humans. I also grew up knowing  that a human hasn't come in contact with our kind in many years. We thought humans lost their fascination with us and our songs long ago;

We thought wrong.

Monster Beneath The Surface (Solangelo AU) by Doctor_Orders1932
28 parts Complete
Everyone in town knows about the sea monster. Every night, he goes into town to find his prey. He lures them in with his voice, only to bring them back to the ocean, to eat them. Few survive this, and the people who do, they lose their mind, like they were cursed. You can only gather from them that he was beautiful, his voice was like an angel's, and that when he took you into the ocean, he became a monster. He only hunted young men, women, teens, and the occasional twelve-year old. It was terrifying, because the people had no way to stop him. Every night, someone would go missing, or come back insane. They knew he lived in the ocean, and when people tried to bomb the area where they thought the monster lived, they would either be cursed, or just eaten by the sea monster himself. And the people who came back insane, they would always wander over the fact that the monster had not even a scratch on him. Teens, young men and women would fear for their lives, and lock themselves in their houses at night. But only one person refused to hide, either in bravery or utter stupidity. That person was Will Solace. So basically, this story is based on the cover art of the book. I just thought it was such a great idea and wanted to put it to story. I saw another person do this and they used the same cover art, and I hope you guys like my version! I, personally very much like it and hope you guys do to! (I don't own any of the characters or art work that appears in this fanfic. All of the characters belong to Rick Riordan.)

59 parts Complete Mature
A merman living in a half-sunken Venice must decide between revealing himself to the oppressive humans to pursue the man he wants or repressing his desires to save everyone that matters to him, except himself, in The Sunken City. There isn't even a word for what Caydo is. At seventeen, he only knows that he is different. If Caydo manages to restore the magic that allowed his kind to breathe underwater, they could live free of the humans, but he would be trapped with the merpeople, who will never accept his sexuality. Attracted to a devious human from the surface, Caydo must navigate a new world of card games and vices, which could bring more trouble, instead of the romance and the refuge he craves. At fifteen, Caydo's younger sister, Sarzana, must choose either to stay a mermaid or to become a human, as it is illegal to bend after she turns sixteen. Unbeknownst to her family and friends, she has already chosen a human life designing buildings, which goes against the merpeople's goddess. The surface might not be welcoming to a mermaid, but the humans have the answer to what happened to her father in the attacks ten years ago. Told from multiple perspectives, the world of the merpeople and the ruins of Venice come to life in this engaging story of fearlessness and hope in the face of adversity. The Little Beacon (GT DNF Merman AU)

30 parts Complete

If you read "Castle Swimmer" on Webtoon, it's similar to that, and no, not much to "The Little Mermaid" A drop from the sun sunk into the depths of the ocean. A merman, born with the abilities of the sea, and one problem, they're not like regular merfolk. They're smaller, like a human borrower, 5 inches tall The merman's duty is to complete prophesies at his own will (not forced like in the webtoon), but the only disadvantage he has is the fear of merchildren As he swims to do a prophesy, something stops him and gets caught in the chaos of the ocean near the surface, for he heard rumors that the surface is a dangerous place for any merman or mermaid, but to the Beacon, it was a blessing
