"Hindi ba talaga puwede?" tanong niya.

May kung anong bumara sa aking lalamunan habang hawak ang manibela. Napaiwas ako ng tingin sa daan. Muli ko siyang tiningnan, ang mga ilaw lamang ng poste sa gabing iyon ang tangi kong pag-asa para makita ang luhaan niyang mga mata. Hindi ako nakapagsalita.

"Dahil ba sa kanya?" sambit niya habang pinipigilang humikbi.

Napakapit ako sa aking bibig. Walang kumakawalang mga salita. Walang maramdaman kundi ang pangungulila. Huminga ng malalim, ibinuga sa kawalan, ipinihit ang sasakyan sa kanan upang huminto sa gitna ng kadiliman.

Tuluyan siyang umiyak ngunit walang kahit anong tunog. Umiyak siya na tila pinipigilan ang kanyang sarili na kumawala sa kalungkutan. Tulala lamang ako, nakatingin sa kawalan.

"Naiintindihan ko na ngayon," sabi niya.

"Hindi gano'n 'yon."
 
Pinatay ko ang aking pananahimik at tumingin sa kanya. Pinilit niyang ngumiti at pahirin muli ang natitira pang luha sa namumugto niyang mga mata. Huminga siya ng malalim at pumaling sa likod ng kotse upang kunin ang kanyang backpack.

"I have to go now," sambit niya nang buksan ang kotse.

"Steph..." wika ko. Sinusubukan siyang pigilan.

"Steph, please."

Naglakad siya sa harap ng kotse kung saan nakikita ko ang patuloy niyang paghikbi at pagyakap sa sarili sa malamig na gabing iyon. Mabilis ang kanyang paglalakad, tila ayaw magpahabol. Ang tanging nagawa ko na lang ay panoorin siya habang unti-unting naglalaho sa aking paningin. Napayuko na lamang ako at isinandal ang ulo sa manibela.
