Malachi isn't much different than the rest. In fact, when the sorcerer he is apprenticing with mysteriously commits suicide, he's just like the others in Lower Vagor: poor, unhappy, and confused.

But Hawthorn's death meant much more than that. The last great sorcerer left behind a thousand prophecies to be fulfilled, a hundred promises he never kept.
