The fascinating story of Peter Jones, born on Merseyside in 1926; fatherless at the age of one; the youngest of many siblings growing up in the poverty stricken years of the Depression. His formative childhood years portray a life of heartfelt deprivation, warmth and humour. Aged 14 at the outbreak of World War II, he witnesses the relentless blitz on Merseyside with miles of dockland transformed into an inferno of fires reflecting blood red on the river. Joining the Nay at 17; taking part in the Normandy landings on D-Day, transporting troops, tanks, wounded and prisoners of war. After the war, marriage ups an downs; labouring jobs; deck-hand to 'skipper' over 20 plus years working on the ferry boats. His unique recollections of events from collisions in fog to suicides and The Quarrymen (Beatles) playing aboard the Royal Iris. Throughout the book Peter's 'Scouse' sense of humour prevails.
