Academy City. An independently governed City 30 years ahead of the future in science and technology, land locked in Japan, made up mainly of high schools, colleges, labs, and possessing a population mainly comprising of students and teachers. 60 percent of these students possess psychic powers and live as espers.. and one of the 7 most powerful of these espers, The Railgun, Mikoto Misaka, lives in this city. 

Mikoto has been orphaned for about 1 month now. Following the death of her family by unknown causes, she has been debating leaving Academy City to study in America. However, things change when she finds herself baring witness to two strange warriors called Archer and Assassin battling it out.  And to make matters stranger, she is saved by a mysterious knight calling herself Saber.

One day, Mikoto finds strange images flying through her head....and two names she can't get out of her head......Touma Kamijou....and Fairy Tail. And if that isn't enough, two men by the names of Gajeel Redfox and Stiyl Magnus appear in town to tell her not to trust anything the highschool has to say. Unfortunately, Mikoto is unable to focus much on her life or the Grail Wars due to the romantic advances of Touma Kamijou's servant Saber of Red, and the emergence of some old allies of Touma's magic dealings in Academy City. Can Mikoto convince Mordred that it's unrequited love.. or will she actually start falling for the weird aggressive gender-confused knight? (much to her immense chagrin).

Then.. six mysterious beings appear in Academy City, calling themselves the Lost Ones. 3 of them, are beings called Quincies... 2 of them are magicians.. and one is a Level 5 esper long forgotten. They seem to have a vested interest in helping to restore Mikoto's lost powers... however, what do they have to gain from helping her? There is something more to this.. and like it or not.. Mikoto has once again sunken into a battle that she might not come out of...

A large city in Japan that is comprised completely of research centers, colleges, high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. 81 percent of it's population is comprised of students while 60 percent of students are super powered psychics created through Academy City's power development program called Espers. Mikoto Misaka is the third strongest Esper out of that 2.1 billion that dwell in Academy City, being also a prestigious student at the most high class all girl's school in the entire world. Naturally, having such high powers, she has faced many weird phenomenon within the city known for the weird and scientifically advanced. However.. her knowledge about the universe is challenged when she meets a particularly weak esper named Ben Tennyson, whose been living on the streets because he couldn't afford the dorm. And as Mikoto will soon discover.. Ben's true powers.. completely unrelated to his esper ones... are quite out of this world...literally.. ( Also known as とある科学のオムニトリックス Toaru Kagaku no Omunitorikkusu.)
