Edward Elric es un niño de catorce años y, a pesar de eso, se ha convertido en un arma humana para Amestris. Junto a su hermano Alphonse, ha crecido mucho a raíz de un trágico acontecimiento que tuvo lugar y, en vez de dedicarse a las actividades que serían normales en jóvenes adolescentes, busca la piedra filosofal a la vez que es llamado "perro del ejército".
¿Por qué dos hermanos adolescentes buscan la piedra filosofal? No es por obtener riquezas ni para alcanzar la inmortalidad, cosas que interesaría a más de un mortal. Después de todo, Edward tranquilamente podría lograr algo así con su cargo, cuando no con sus manos de alquimista.
