In the second book following "How it was Left" -
By the summer before their junior year, Zooey proposes a promise that she and Lila won't let anything stop them from moving on from Borne to pave their own ways for themselves, even if those paths send them to separate places. But when Lila's boyfriend Michael dies tragically at the end of their senior year, those separate places the girls end up in leave Lila remaining in Borne while Zooey heads off for college in Chicago. Not only are the two separate from each other geographically, but through hidden secrets both have vowed to keep from each other about the terrible night of Michael's death.
Five years later, Zooey has returned to Borne after finishing school, but unfortunately, experiences in her past 5 years of life have forced their way home with her. Not only that, but being back in such close proximity of Lila reminds her that she still carries a terrible secret about Michael she's sure Lila never knew about.
Zooey's arrival back into town leaves Lila feeling much of the same. Riddled with guilt about the parts of her life she has kept secret from Zooey and others, she finds herself pushing away the only person she's truly been able to trust since Michael has been gone: Michael's brother, Hunter.
