Evelyn Pierce returns to her hometown after a decade, hoping to escape her painful past and find peace in teaching history at the local college. But the town is hardly a refuge-rumors are swirling about the reappearance of a legendary artifact: the Heartstone, said to hold the power to reveal hidden truths but also to bring about destruction. Legend has it that the Heartstone is cursed, but many in town believe it has reappeared, hidden somewhere in the castle ruins. Leo Hart, the town librarian, is also a historian who has been obsessed with the Heartstone legend. He finds himself drawn to Evelyn, who seems to share a connection with the town's lore that even she doesn't fully understand. As he spends more time with Evelyn, he senses her pain and mystery, and he's determined to unravel her past. Evelyn, meanwhile, is unsettled by her growing attraction to Leo, fearing he may discover the truth about her former fiancé, Theo. But soon, strange occurrences begin: messages in the form of poetry are left for Evelyn in the library, mirroring letters Theo once wrote to her. Leo and Evelyn begin to suspect that Theo may still be alive-and that he may hold the key to the Heartstone's location. As they get closer to the truth, they uncover more secrets about the town's past, Theo's disappearance, and their own families' intertwined histories.
