A prisoner in her own home. Held captive by someone who was supposed to protect her, who'd taken an oath to protect all innocents. When Avery Asher's policeman father is finally sentenced for the neglect and abuse he put her through, she takes it as a sign that things are about to change for the better. She spends the next two years enjoying her freedom, learning to trust again. Learning to live again. But as with all good things, they come to an end sooner or later. When one insignificant act of stupidity turns into one of the biggest mistakes of her life, it sends her reeling. Suddenly events from her childhood come rushing back to haunt her. Things are happening all over again, only this time it's much worse. You'd think witnessing a murder was simple. You report it, testify, and move on. Unfortunately, accusing a policeman of murder when no one believed her the first time isn't something Avery can do. Now on the run for her life, she enlists the help of an acquaintance Eli Kindred. A man of questionable background who seems to specialise in kicking ass, as well asevading all of her probing questions. Not that Avery cares much at the moment. If she survives the week, she'll make it her personal mission to crack the mystery of Eli Kindred.

When River was fourteen, his parents were found murdered in their home. He never explained what happened that night. He never defended himself. He never spoke at all. Five years later, the silence is finally broken - not by River, but by the court granting him a new trial. Until then, he is released into the custody of his godfather Adam, a high-profile lawyer who has believed in River's innocence from the beginning. Amber is not so sure. To her mother, who is River's godmother, he is a danger that should never have been allowed back into their lives. To her father, River is a broken boy failed by the system. To Amber... he is the ghost of her childhood. The friend she once loved. And the stranger she no longer understands. River returns colder, unreadable, and beautiful in a way that makes Amber's heart ache with something she wished she had outgrown. But behind his quiet stare lies something darker - a truth he has kept locked inside since the night everything changed. Everyone wants to know what happened. Everyone wants answers. But only River knows the truth. And the closer Amber gets to him, the more she wonders if some secrets are better left buried.
