A quiet writer named Adam Wolfe meets a group of people that attend the same college as him. As they become friends, Adam discovers that one of the guys, named Cody, has formed a group called the Dream Gazers. The Dream Gazers practice lucid dreaming, the ability to realize you're dreaming while you're dreaming, which gives the dreamer the power to do anything in his/her dream. They lucid dream as a group every night, going on wild adventures and leading entirely different lives within their dreams. Through the teaching of Cody, Adam learns how to do this as well, and quickly comes to love the dream adventures he has with his new group of friends. Things take a turn for the worse soon after, as Cody begins acting strange, setting off a string of events that will threaten the lives of them all.

As he starts having some strange dreams and visions himself, he decides to go, with two investigating undercover police officers, to a small town where the publishing company, who are the ones publishing the books, are stationed.
