Avery wrapped an arm around my waist to catch me before I could get out the door. He pushed me up against the door, trapping me between his body and the door. "What's wrong?" I asked innocently. His face hovered over mine, much closer than I was used to. His gaze didn't leave mine as he spoke. "It would have been different if I had told him from the start. You wanted me to lie for you. You started this. If we tell him what really happened, he would be pissed at me for lying to him." "Stormie, you got a phone call!" Mason yelled up the stairs. The closeness between Avery and me started to make my legs feel like Jell-O, and I couldn't make sense of it. Our breathing became heavier. His eyes trapped mine. "Answer him," Avery murmured. "Uh," I stammered. I cleared my throat. "Be down in a minute!" My voice came out higher than usual. My gaze still couldn't escape Avery's. My heart raced wildly as his chest rose and fell against mine. Avery's gaze flickered to my lips. What's happening? My gaze fell to his mouth, which was moving closer to mine. She looks up at me, taking a step forward and smiling slightly, "How can I ever get hurt when I have you here to protect me?" "But you could have gotten hurt," I murmur softly, hanging my head and feeling my shoulders drop, the tension seeping from my body. "No. Stop," She cuts me off sternly but tenderly, "Don't talk like that, Reece. I'm okay, you're okay, we're okay," She speaks softly, reaching her hand up to gently brush her thumb over my cheek, just under the cut that's there. "We're okay," I repeat, taking a small step closer to her. She nods with a small smile, moving her hand down from my cheek and instead placing the palm of her hand on my chest, right over my heart. I know she can feel how fast my heart is beating. I just don't know why it's doing that. ~ Reece Carter is the bad boy of Northwood High. He smokes and he fights. Dawn is the home town good girl with a spunky attitude and compassionate heart. So much like her father and struggling with the estranged relationship with her mother, her life is about to be turned upside down. With only her loyal friends and family to rely on, she will be pushed to the breaking point. Nathan, the resident bad-boy, returns home in a unique arrangement that forces him to build up his defensive walls. A violent past he has been trying to lock away, comes back to haunt him and threatens to break apart everything he has worked for. What happens when these two fiery personalities meet? They hate each other – at first. They have a way of pushing each others' buttons and getting under each others' skins. They each think the other is conceited and selfish. Then they confuse each other with small acts of kindness and unexpected moments of affection. These moments are dashed away by their antagonism, stubbornness and pride. They are falling in love, but neither will see it if they can't get past their own selfish attitudes and personal demons. Only time will tell if they can reach out from under the surface and find the love that brings out the best and worst in each other. © 2012 Amanda Nichols All Rights Reserved.
