Michael want's to break her out of her shell, and show her the World she is missing out on. During this time, it was unacceptable for black and white people to mix and if you were ever seen with each other, trouble would be brewing in the town, and everyone would stare and despise on you. Mr Sail is a white man too, who agrees that black and white people are fine to mix amongst each other. But he just pretends to the town that he doesn't approve, and keeps Michael as his lower assistant worker when actually they get on so well, just so the town wouldn't ridicule Mr Sail. Winnie and Michael laid eyes on each other when Winnie's Mother first went into the Local shop for dinner. That's where it began...
