The group moved at a constant pace, never stopping. Brynn was clutching Shay's hand for dear life as they raced through the woods.
They did it! They really did!
They escaped the academy! But when you're stranded in the woods there's no time for 'whooping' and celebrating.

Brynn, Dawn, Mike and Gwen and Scott tensed up and went full on guardian, ready to strike if there was an attack.
They used the technique they were taught as Novices at St. Vladimir's Academy.

Dawn stayed behind the group, watching their backs, while Brynn took the leader position.
They had a really good stance going on.
But no one amount of protection and alertness could prepare them for the Strigoi lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce.

A nearby bush rustled and a Strigoi leaped out, grabbing Brynn's best friend, Dawn.
And the whole world seemed to freeze in that moment.
