Tanawaer Alderleaf lives in Linolial, one of the many Cities of Men. Because it is a City of Men, he is unwelcome. Why? Because he is what is known as a half-breed - the offspring of a human and an elf. His mother, a human, died giving birth to him in Linolial, and his elvish father was killed by bandits as he was travelling to Linolial with his pregnant wife. At least, that was what Tanawaer was told by Keeper Tolin, a scholarly human who raised him. She has lived her life hiding from the eyes of society, alone in a house of nobility. Years passed in her life, years full of shame, grief, and loneliness. Losing her home, her status as a noble, and the family name, she ventures out and discovers more than she ever knew about the city. Here is where the story begins.
