Moon is a shy, intelligent 7th grader. She's quiet and dislikes drawing attention to herself. She's unpopular and has been so for as long as she can remember.
Winter is a sarcastic rich boy whom a lot of people don't like because of rumors spread about him. Many people don't like him and he feels alone.
Qibli is a popular at school. Everyone thinks he's funny and smart. He has a decent status among the kids, but he doesn't think many people understand him.
Turtle is a quiet boy. Many people like him and have tried to be friends with him, but he's socially awkward. He's a bit clumsy.
Peril is a loud, enthusiastic girl. She's emotional and no one likes her because she doesn't know how to handle people. She was also held back a year.
Kinkajou is friendly and kind. She's very smart and skipped a grade in school. Many people like her and she's always looking for new friends. She's popular but finding it hard to keep up with the status.

These kids end up being unlikely friends and banding together to combat the struggles of middle school. Winter and Qibli fight for Moon's affection, frenemies, and other drama happens at Jade Mountain Middle.
