McKenna McCarthy moved
from Willows, Wisconsin after the unexpected death of her sister, and almost herself. She and her father move to Malibu, California and leave her mother behind to rot in jail for the murder of Jessie (McKenna's sister) and almost McKenna. Lucas Vega is one of the most popular kids at school, but is also very poor.
Lucas doesn't want to loose his popular status, but at the same time he needs to keep a stable job to support his family. Both his mother and sister have a rare type of cancer, but all Lucas can do is sit around and watch them die slowly.
